Waste Not, Want Not: Closing the Loop in the Hartwood Timber Workshop

At Hartwood Timber, our work begins with a deep respect for the material. Whether we are crafting a bespoke estate sign from European Oak or an artisan chopping board from Iroko, we start with the highest quality, FSC-certified timber.

However, precision craftsmanship naturally produces a lot of “by-product.” In many workshops, sawdust and shavings are seen as a waste management problem. At Hartwood Timber, we see them as a resource.

The Problem: The Hidden Footprint of Woodworking

Every time we plane a board to a crisp finish or use our CNC machine to carve intricate lettering, fine timber particles are created. While our extraction systems are essential for maintaining a clean, safe, and breathable workshop environment, they also capture a massive amount of high-quality wood fibre every single week.

The Solution: The Briquette

We decided early on that “disposal” wasn’t an option. Instead, we invested in a process to close the loop.

By taking those loose shavings and sawdust and putting them through a high-pressure compression process, dense, clean-burning fuel briquettes are created.

Community Over Commerce

These are not sold. For us, these briquettes represent a way to give back. Throughout the winter months, we distribute our fuel supply to our team, family and friends. It’s a small way to ensure that the warmth of the timber we work with every day literally reaches the hearths of our local community.

Why It Matters

Integrating sustainability into the grain of our business means looking beyond the finished product. By turning our “waste” into a carbon-neutral heating source, we ensure that:

  • No timber is sent to landfill.
  • The energy stored in the timber is repurposed.
  • Our workshop footprint remains as light as possible.

When you commission a sign or a gift from Hartwood Timber, you aren’t just getting a piece of handcrafted joinery, you’re supporting a circular process that respects the forest from start to finish.
