We are thrilled to share that owner and craftsman of Hartwood Timber, Robert Joslin, was recently interviewed by Sign Update Magazine for their “Sign Maker Profile” feature in the March/April 2026 edition!
The article, titled “The Heart in Timber Sign Making,” dives into the journey of Hartwood Timber—from the early days crafting bespoke staircases and furniture to becoming a leading name in sustainable, high-quality timber signage.
From Small Beginnings to National Impact
What started as a single engraved house sign posted on eBay during the 2020 covid lockdown has blossomed into a business that supplies signage across the UK. Whether it’s wayfinding for the National Trust or stable signs for the Mounted Police, our blend of traditional woodcraft techniques and modern CNC technology allows us to create products that are both beautiful and accessible.
Craftsmanship with a Conscience
Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword for us; it’s our ethos. As Robert mentions in the profile:
“We only buy FSC certified timber… we’re not using timber that’s being cut down and not replanted again.”
From powering our workshop with solar panels to using VOC free oils and repurposing our sawdust into briquettes, we are committed to making sure our environmental footprint is as light as possible.
Looking Ahead
We are incredibly honored to have been Highly Commended for both “Sustainable Product of the Year” and “Excellence in Craftsmanship” at the recent Sign Industry Awards. We are now looking forward to expanding our trade partnerships and continuing to prove that handmade, sustainable products have a vital place in the modern world.
